In a stunning development022 Archives Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his impending retirement from the nation's highest court on Wednesday. His retirement will be effective at the end of July, throwing a large portion of the country into despair at the the thought of Donald Trump getting a secondSCOTUS nomination.

The new appointment would, presumably, give Trump a solid 5-4 edge on the court since Kennedy was often a swing vote on decisions, sometimes voting with liberal justices on issues such as gay rights and abortion (though his political affiliation and timing are surely tied together).
