At OpTic Gaming's first professional Call of Dutytournament in 20108+ adult movies - watch free full movies and download a scant 400 people were tuned into the action in Dallas. Then team owner Hector "H3CZ" Rodriguez used his phone to post a video to OpTic's YouTube page, boosting the viewership to 3,500 in minutes -- not a bad number for a time before Twitch helped esports explode.
The viewer count topped Halo's during the tournament, a major achievement at the time.

Today, OpTic Gaming is tearing through the professional Call of Dutyscene, taking first place in more than 10 tournaments since the beginning of 2015. With its fourth Call of DutyWorld Championship tournament looming just around the corner, OpTic is setting its sights on finally winning it all, an achievement 10 years in the making.
Before shooting to the top of the pro scene, OpTic formed in 2006 as a pick-up group of guys that would hang out after school and work to play Call of Duty.
"Picture pick-up basketball at the YMCA -- that's exactly what it was," Rodriguez told Mashable. "It was just a bunch of guys that congregated on a certain game, which was Call of Duty 2."
The team was competitive but never really made it anywhere, Rodriguez said. After the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfarein 2007, previous owner Ryan "OpTic J" Musselman semi-retired and handed OpTic Gaming's reins to Rodriguez, who played alongside his little brother, Pedro.
"My brother and I decided to stop competing," Rodriguez said. "We were never going to be good enough to compete so [we said], 'Let's just have fun with the game, we love the game... Let's create videos for YouTube."
The brothers didn't have any experience in video, but hey looked at some examples on YouTube and bought a capture card. Rodriguez tested it out and loved it -- it became what he wanted to do.
Starting in 2008, Rodriguez and OpTic Gaming released video after video on the nascent YouTube around their explois in Call of Duty, including a wildly popular Modern Warfare 2sniper montage.
OpTic's popularity grew between 2008 and 2010, netting over 300,000 subscribers. With such a large, growing audience behind them, the team wanted to revisit their competitive roots.
"I said, 'I have a platform here and if I go back to competitive Call of Duty and we get a team together, we're going to have the most popular team,'" Rodriguez said. "We have the biggest fan base. No other team is out there doing what we're doing. Nobody out there cares about the YouTube scene and its connection with the fans."
So the crew jumped right back in, bringing in a group of players to compete under OpTic Gaming. Its first live event was the 2010 MLG National Championship in Dallas, where the team placed fourth. OpTic didn't forget about YouTube during that time; management helped turn players into personalities that could succeed the platform.
"We went from an entertainment-only team to an esports organization," Rodriguez said.
Throughout 2011 and 2012, Optic Gaming started taking home trophies, winning first place in multiple tournaments with some amazing players including JKap, Nadeshot, Merk and more. The team stayed strong through roster changes, until the release of Call of Duty: Ghostsin 2013 marked a dramatic shift in their fortunes.
That year, the team never won a tournament, a trend that continued through 2014. Over a two-year slump, the team's only first-place win was at the MLG X Games Invitational, earning the first-ever gold medal in esports.
"We were so ecstatic," Rodriguez said. "It was one of those things where everything was going wrong the entire year. OpTic, the most popular team, is now the underdog... OpTic exploded."
Riding that wave of support, the team made a few changes: Crimsix and Formal joined the team to play with Scump and Nadeshot. Nadeshot retired a few months later and the team welcomed Karma from its secondary team, OpTic Nation.
"Once that happened, everything gelled, everything fell into place," Rodriguez said. "[Scump] finally had a team of supporting players that can literally win games for him and all the weight was no longer on his shoulders. We had Formal, such a superstar, a champion from Halo. Crimsix had been kicking our ass the last three years and is now finally on OpTic. Karma, in my eyes, is the best Call of Dutyplayer who has ever lived."
Rodriguez said the team's chemistry has never been better. Scump, Crimsix and Formal live together and Karma is just minutes away, so they spend a lot of time together.
"As dominating as they are, as good as they are, if they don't win this one, they know they will be nothing."
Since that roster was solidified in April 2015, OpTic Gaming has been nearly unstoppable, taking first place at multiple UMG, ESL and MLG events including the 2015 MLG World Finals. In 2016, the team placed first in the North American Call of DutyWorld League regular season and playoffs, earning its fourth trip to the World Championship, this year held at Call of DutyXP.
"This tournament is by far the most important tournament that OpTic has ever had in its history," Rodriguez said. "I've never seen them more motivated. Everybody knows what's on the line; they know that every single championship they've won since last year's [World Championship] mean nothing. As dominating as they are, as good as they are, if they don't win this one, they know they will be nothing. They know that all their work, all their wins, everything they've done this year will mean zero because they don't have the one that matters."
The Call of Duty: Black Ops III tournament starts with group play Thursday on Twitch, setting up a double elimination bracket that runs from Friday to Sunday in Inglewood, California. If everything goes how they hope, OpTic Gaming will be playing in the finals at 3 p.m. ET for the coveted title: Call of Dutyworld champions.
