Last month it was an art installation filled with thousands of VHS tapes of Tom Cruise's 90s classic film Jerry Maguire. Now comedy video collective Everything is Watch MidhunterTerrible! is dreaming even bigger, imagining a giant pyramid of those video tapes.
The group is really serious about making their desert pyramid of tapes, which they call Jerrys, a reality. After hosting their VHS-filled pop-up in a Los Angeles "video store" last month with 14,000 copies of the movie, they have taken their growing collection of old-school tapes to the next level.
SEE ALSO: Budweiser turned a classic '90s Super Bowl ad into a Snapchat gameWith the group's GoFundMe online fundraising campaign they are hoping people will sign up and show them the money. They are seeking $400,000 to build the permanent monument to celebrate the film and the almost extinct video technology.
The group need funds for design plans, purchasing the desert land, building the pyramid and buying even more Jerry Maguire video tapes. Over the past eight years, they've amassed 14,000 copies.
As they willingly admit about the project, "This is the stupidest incarnation of the American dream and it must be realized!" When they made the initial call for video tape donations they received a huge haul, including one donation of 1,300 tapes.
Now they are hoping for that same eagerness and excitement to fulfill their vision. All the money raised at their January pop-up video store installation is going toward their pyramid project, but as of Friday midday only $241 had been donated online to the project.
Keep the Jerry dream alive.
