That poor woman. Those poor frogs.
Over its eight seasons,American Horror Storyhas put its viewers and cast through a lot. Max Greenfield was forcibly sewn into mattress. Frances Conroy got burned at the stake—twice. Adina Porter even watched her own leg meat get cooked and eaten by cannibals... in front of her.
All of this, I was willing to accept. Being an AHSfan comes with risks. I know what I signed up for.
But what happened to Lily Rabe on last night's episode of Apocalypsehas me enraged, sad, and (honestly) a little nauseous.
SEE ALSO: 'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' goes full demonic... Hogwarts?Let us recap the monstrous moment. Michael (aka sexy Satan sponsored by Pantene) completes the Seven Wonders to prove his worth as the next coven leader. As a final test, the current Supreme, Cordelia Goode, challenges him to bring everyone's favorite animal lover, Misty Day (Lily Rabe), back from Hell. Michael accepts the challenge and we are soon transported to Misty's personalized afterlife—a middle school science lab.
We see Misty surrounded by goggle-wearing, scalpel-wielding adolescents. Each has in front of them a stiff frog on a sterile steel tray. Using her resurrection powers, Misty brings her dead frog back to life. It happily croaks and hops on the table. She smiles.
Misty's frog dissection hell first hit FX during the Coven finale—on January 29, 2014.
"Mr. Kingery, she did it again!" Misty's snot-nosed deskmate rats her out to the teacher. Mr. Kingery then forces her to dissect/murder the now living frog through pained sobs. When the teacher walks away, Misty resurrects the frog once again. She smiles.
"Mr. Kingery, she did it again!" The same painful sequence repeats a second time. And then a third. And then on into eternity.
All of that is pretty messed up (particularly for animal lovers), but stomachable right?
Wrong.
The real kicker here is that this demonic sequence didn't premiere on last night's episode. Misty's frog dissection hell first hit FX during the American Horror Story: Covenfinale—on January 29, 2014.

Sure, it was always implied that Misty was stuck murdering amphibians for eternity, but the AHS creators' commitment to recreating the original scene beat-by-beat nearly 5 years later definitely drives thehorrifying point home. Misty started dissecting frogs in this hellscape before The Hunger Games movies ended. Before MoviePass got popular and then fell apart. Before Leonardo DiCaprio had an Oscar! So much time has passed.
Luckily (or perhaps unluckily depending on how the season plays out), Michael was able to bring our beloved Misty back to Earth. I find some comfort in knowing she was hugged a lot and serenaded by Stevie Nicks, but that haunting callback is definitely going to stick with me. Probably forever...
