Gorogoa is one of the most inventive and Dear Utol (2025): Week 7 Highlights 40beautiful puzzle games ever created, and it's here just in time to distract from the stresses of the holidays.
Gorogoa, available for iOS, PC, and Nintendo Switch, is captivating with its hand-drawn artwork and uniquely designed puzzles, and keeps you on your toes with it's unconventional path of progression all the way to the end.
SEE ALSO: 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' was the most unforgettable game of 2017The game is split into four squares, and each square can contain a scene. Within those scenes, players can tap or click around to discover new actions or areas of interest, sometimes zooming in and out and shifting into different areas entirely, searching for what to do next to advance the unnamed protagonist's quest to collect five different-colored orbs.
The only way to move forward is to explore and try new things, and the way the answer to each moment's current puzzle reveals itself is incredibly clever.
Oftentimes, it's not exactly clear what you're supposed to do. Sometimes sliding scenes next to each other or putting one on top of the other is the answer, or jumping into someone's thoughts to find the missing piece of a puzzle is what's required.
Via GiphyFiguring out what you're supposed to do and maneuvering around to do it is so satisfying, a feeling aided by the dissonant, almost haunting music that fades in and out at key moments.
There isn't a concrete story to speak of, just a sort of underlying theme of bringing color to a sometimes dreary world, often using people's memories or imaginations to find that color.
Via GiphyThe game grows in difficulty, which is to say the solutions grow more creative and obtuse as time goes on, although the path to get to those solutions stays as simple as clicking and sliding. Still, the game continues to surprise with its inventiveness.
Gorogoa is relatively short but captivating, and it's a great little game to sink a few minutes (or a couple hours) into at the end of this whirlwind of a year.
