Late Wednesday,Watch Friends Pornhub announced on their blog that PayPal will no longer support payouts. According to the site, this will impact thousands of sex workers.
"We are all devastated by PayPal's decision to stop payouts to over a hundred thousand performers who rely on them for their livelihoods," the post read.
Banks and payment platforms have long disallowed payments to and from sex workers, but since the passing of the controversial FOSTA-SESTA (Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act), platforms such as PayPal and also general social media sites seem to be turning more hostile towards porn creators.
For example, crowdfunding platform Patreon cracked down on adult content creators this June; in their adult content guidelines they state, "We don't allow pornographic material or sexual services on Patreon, which we define as 'real people engaging in sexual acts such as masturbation or sexual intercourse on camera.'" PayPal is one of Patreon's payment partners.
PayPal has already been listed as a platform that discriminates against sex workers, according to collective Survivors Against SESTA. In their Acceptable Use Policy, PayPal states, "You may not use the PayPal service for activities that ... items that are considered obscene ... certain sexually oriented materials or services."
Mashable has reached out to PayPal for comment and will update this article if we hear back.
